Learning and Connecting with Cultural Heritage
Mahamevnawa Language School of Adelaide
Our Language School gives children in Adelaide an opportunity to learn Sinhala and connect with Sri Lankan cultural heritage while growing up in Australia.
We aim to encourage an interest in Sinhala, help children connect with their family language and heritage, and create opportunities to learn alongside other children and families.
Our Language School classes are free of charge.
Learning with our community
The School is part of Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery of Adelaide’s community activities. We welcome enquiries from parents and carers interested in Sinhala language learning for their children.
Contact us to find out about the teaching program, age groups, class arrangements and available places.
Current classes
Our Language School currently operates from a hired venue. Please contact us for the latest class dates, location and enrolment information.
A proposed future home
The proposed Mahamevnawa Multicultural Community Hub would provide a permanent home for the School, alongside a public library and opportunities for cultural learning and shared activities. The development is subject to funding, relevant approvals and final design.

Sinhala School is held on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Sunday of every month from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm
First language (mother tongue) acquisition in a foreign country and culture is a challenging endeavor. Our Sinhala language school was established with the ultimate aim of catering to this difficult task. Learning the Sinhala language with over 2000 years of rich cultural heritage will truly connect the expatriate with the pristine values and benefits bound to our home country.
The Sinhala alphabet, which was used by the Arahants for writing the Tripitaka, is the one still in use today. Therefore, to teach your child, as well, this splendid and profound Sinhala language, the Sinhala language school is held on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Sunday of every month from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm.
